“Mental health is very important to me for many personal and business reasons. As a nurse practitioner, I realized the huge need here in Abilene. We have no mental health resources for our youth when I was put in a personal circumstance to need mental health resources. I realized that it was going to take over three months to get a child who is suicidal and to care and the only resources were in Dallas I literally was told telehealth in Dallas go to Dallas.

There’s absolutely nothing here in Abilene and that was very surprising to me.

That is why I decided I wanted to reach out and start mental health resources here that our youth could actually use if they were in need if somebody is suicidal or needing mental health right then and there we don’t have anything and we needed something and I wanted to change that that is why I found stand for the silent and I started our own chapter called the Moxie here in Abilene we had our first gala this past November and we now have a actual committee we have had our second meeting and we want to really instill resources here in Abilene we have members currently.

I am working on a bowling tournament in February. We want to start reaching out to the local schools and helping establish therapist that can go to the schools and help the children that are suicidal and evaluate what other needs they need and get them the right therapist. I want to work with the kids that don’t have the money for counseling. A lot of the times what we don’t realize is that nobody has evaluated them. Nobody has helped them get into counseling. Counseling is expensive and sometimes they cannot afford it. That is what the moxie is for. It’s to help those who cannot afford counseling get counseling.

If you look at the 2019 Hendrick survey, it shows that we had 19 suicides and we are one of the highest suicide states in Texas and the most awful thing is suicide is preventable, but we just don’t have the resources here in Abilene and that is what we are going to change

The money that we get is going straight towards making programs helping get therapist helping to bring the founder of our foundation to Abilene so that we can have a seminar on bullying and suicide risk so that we can raise their awareness and let the kids know that we are here to help them.”

We have no mental health support centers here in Abilene eventually I want a brick and mortar where the kids can go

My son attempted suicide in 2023 and we were not able to get any help in Abilene thankfully I am a nurse practitioner and I was able to help him get the help he needed I do not want any family to have to deal with a similar situation alone.
